Winged scapula, or scapula alata, is a medical condition where the shoulder blade protrudes from the back due to weakness or paralysis of its stabilizing muscles, primarily the serratus anterior. This dysfunction can result from nerve damage caused by trauma, repetitive motion, or certain illnesses. The condition often leads to pain, limited range of motion, and difficulty with activities like lifting and pulling. While some cases may resolve on their own, treatment often involves physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles, and in severe cases, may require surgery.
